Garden Design Hastings East Sussex

From concept through to implementation, this garden design in Hastings, East Sussex was developed with a focus on family living, interaction and outdoor lifestyle. A natural swimming pond forms the heart of the garden, positioned to take advantage of breathtaking views across the English Channel — on a clear day, the cliffs of France can be seen on the horizon.

A green-roofed family garden room sits proudly within the space, clad in timber reclaimed from the clients’ previous garden. The wood was treated using the Shou Sugi Ban method, giving it durability and character ideal for a coastal environment. Station Black porcelain paving provides a contemporary contrast, leading seamlessly to a sloped-roof outdoor kitchen laid with locally sourced recycled tiles.

The natural swimming pond connects to the surrounding garden through a timber bridge, guiding visitors through abundant planting. A mature rhododendron was crown-lifted as part of the design, allowing filtered light and height variation, while native and ornamental planting flows into a wildflower meadow that meets the rolling Fairlight hills beyond.

A series of carefully planned zones encourage movement and discovery, offering places to sit, socialise, relax, play and enjoy nature. The upper terrace includes a fish pond and productive garden space, adding further purpose and variety to the landscape. Sculptures and interactive furniture chosen by the clients bring individuality and playful creativity, giving the garden its own personality and reflecting the family’s style and passions.

This coastal garden balances ecology, sustainability and family life — celebrating the seaside setting while offering a private retreat designed for every season.
